Intensive Language Programs

The year-long intensive language program is designed to get you up and going very quickly in your new language. Students experience plenty of hands-on attention from instructors and coursework equips you with oral and writing skills (the productive skills) as well as listening and reading skills (the receptive skills). The goal is to bring you to a level of proficiency that will enable you to be immersed in the language and culture and begin your work as soon as possible.

Our Approach: A Communicative environment emphasizing accuracy and fluency

The language learning approach in all LCTI language programs and institutes is focused on communication, ensuring that students spend the majority of their time in conversational activities.  Experienced native speakers provide most of the instruction in conversation courses, while Americans proficient in the language provide grammatical instruction designed to promote accurate speech patterns.  Besides courses in conversation and grammar, students also participate in courses such as Learning to Converse; Intro to the Russian Bible (incorporated into Learning to Converse for Level One or Basic students); Bible and Apologetics (Level Two). We also augment the curriculum with additional needs when desired, such as vocabulary for businessmen, among other areas.

Basic and Intermediate level language courses are available.

Program Goals

The Intensive Program curriculum used at LCTI has several goals:

1. To provide candidates with an initial language-learning cognitive profile (in association with our Pre-field LAST program), which helps them understand their own language-acquisition needs and effective learning strategies for long-term success.

2. To provide candidates with a strong foundation in their chosen language, emphasizing communicative skills for life and ministry in discipleship situations.

  • At LCTI we have developed an intensive learning environment where candidates develop strong conversational skills in the areas which are most vital for work and life in their new culture.
  • We also provide the kind of whole-life training, counsel and encouragement to enable individuals to fulfill their calling as effectively as possible.

3. For participants to attain a minimum proficiency of level 2 in reading and writing and level 2- in speaking and listening (equivalent to government/foreign service guidelines). Results vary depending on aptitude and length of study.

  • Held in Spokane, WA, our year-round training programs for Russian and Chinese offer a unique language-learning environment that is designed to enable the student to acquire as much proficiency as possible in the shortest possible time.
  • We utilize the most effective language-teaching methods and techniques.
  • Our goal is to provide a caring, encouraging, and challenging language-learning environment.

4. To thoroughly equip students with an understanding of the cultural worldview of their chosen people group. LCTI programs include

  • Seminars covering the history, cultural formation, religions, and other essential aspects of the cultures of China, the Middle East and the former USSR.  Critical issues and challenges associated with church-planting, discipleship and conducting business within these contexts are covered.
  • Principles of effective intercultural communication, cross-cultural adaptation, relationship building, and conflict management.
  • Combined with other programs, such as TESOL certification or pre-field Preparation, our intensives help you to make a lasting impact on your new culture.

The result of this system is effective and speedy language acquisition and cultural understanding regardless of one’s natural abilities.^ top
