Intensive Language Programs

LCTI has equipped more than 1000 language and culture specialists with the skills needed for effective cross-cultural service.

Rapid Acquisition of your new language: A Communicative environment emphasizing both accuracy and fluency

LCTI’s Intensive Program is, well, intensive! Classes meet approximately 15 hours per week, and the different courses include instruction in how to communicate (conversation), learning to speak and write accurately (grammar), understanding the cultural and historical context (culture classes – what we call “East Slavic” or “East Asian” Civilization). The language learning approach in all our Intensives is focused on communication: all courses are designed to get you proficient enough to communicate in the language quickly. Students spend the majority of their time in conversational activities (listening and speaking), and also learn to read and write well. Both highly trained native speakers and Americans who are experts in your chosen language provide instruction. The goal is to bring you to a level of proficiency that will enable you to be immersed in the language and culture and begin your work as soon as possible.

Besides courses designed to teach you how to converse and have accurate speech, students participate in topical conversation courses, Intro to the Bible (for your chosen language). We also augment the curriculum with additional needs specific to your specialty, such as vocabulary for international business, public relations, Christian witness, among other areas. The full year intensive will get you up and running very quickly with Basic and Intermediate levels covered. One year of training surpasses the abilities of a college degree in your chosen language.

If full-time training is not possible for you, Part-time and Online programs are also available.

Program Goals for LCTI’s Intensive Programs

1. To provide candidates with an initial language-learning cognitive profile (in association with our Pre-field LAST program), which helps you understand your own language-acquisition needs and effective learning strategies for long-term success.

2. To provide candidates with a strong foundation in the chosen language, emphasizing communicative skills for life and effective cross-cultural work or ministry.

  • At LCTI we have developed an intensive learning environment where candidates develop strong conversational skills in the areas which are most vital for work and life in their new culture.
  • We provide the kind of whole-life training, counsel and encouragement to enable individuals to fulfill their calling as effectively as possible.

3. For participants to attain a minimum proficiency of level 2 in reading and writing and level 2- in speaking and listening (equivalent to government/foreign service guidelines). Results vary depending on cognitive profile and length of study.

  • Held in Spokane, WA, our year-round training programs for Russian and Chinese offer a unique language-learning environment that is designed to enable the student to acquire as much proficiency as possible in the shortest possible time.
  • We utilize the most effective language-teaching methods and techniques.
  • Our goal is to provide a caring, encouraging, and challenging language-learning environment.

4. To thoroughly equip students with an understanding of the cultural worldview of their chosen people group. LCTI programs include

  • Seminars covering the history, cultural formation, religions, and other essential aspects of the cultures of China, the Middle East and the former USSR.  Critical issues and challenges associated with church-planting, discipleship and conducting business within these contexts are covered.
  • Principles of effective intercultural communication, cross-cultural adaptation, relationship building, and conflict management.
  • Combined with other programs, such as TESOL certification or pre-field Preparation, our intensives help you to make a lasting impact on your new culture.

The result of this system is effective and speedy language acquisition and cultural understanding regardless of one’s natural abilities.^ top
