Pre-field Culture and Language Acquisition Program

New Courses that prepare you for any Cross-cultural work

In response to requests we have received to offer more general, pre-field preparation for cross-cultural work and language acquisition, LCTI is preparing to launch two new intensive courses beginning Fall, 2018.  A 2-week intensive Cross-cultural Adaptation and Communication course will be offered three different times of the year, while a 2-week Language Acquisition Strategies course will be offered in the Fall and Spring. When combined with the culture-specific intensive programs already offered at LCTI, these courses will provide new workers with efficient and cost-effective training that adheres to proven best practices in how to prepare for effective cross-cultural service. Also an excellent segue into the intensive language programs already offered at LCTI.

Purpose of the Program

Cross-cultural Prep: Beginning Fall, 2018, the 2-week intensive Cross-cultural Preparation course will equip you with both an understanding of effective principles for adapting to a new culture, and the intercultural skills necessary for effective work and communication. Cross-cultural Prep includes:

CC Prep: Principles of effective cross-cultural adaptation

  • Personal Intercultural Profile: Assessing your aptitude for cross-cultural service
  • Issues in the acculturation process
  • Culture Typology & resulting issues: Honor-shame, Guilt-innocence & Fear-power cultures
  • How to bond with the host culture while avoiding common cross-cultural mistakes and struggles
  • Building trust in your host culture
  • Principles for effective intercultural communication
  • Effective strategies for avoiding the negative consequences of culture shock
  • How to maintain effective and wholesome relationships on the field
  • How to build an effective cross-cultural team, and much more

Language Acquisition Strategies Training (LAST): The LAST course equips you with effective strategies for language acquisition, regardless of the status of the language, chosen learning method or the learner’s preference.  This course prepares you well for any language program and provides excellent preparation for learning a minority language (one for which an intensive or other program is not available). The training takes into account the most up-to-date principles and techniques in second language acquisition, while rejecting the old “one size fits all” perspective still prevalent in other programs.

LAST: Effective Strategies for Learning a Second Language

  • Effective Principles for adult language acquisition
  • Personal Learning Profile: Mapping your cognitive abilities for effective language learning
  • Style or Preference? Fitting your learning style and personality to an effective learning strategy
  • Beyond Fluency: How to become truly proficient in your new language
  • Personalizing Your Context: Matching your profile & experience to the right strategy for your new language
  • Introduction to various techniques that fit different language learner profiles

Class activities for both programs include teacher-led instruction, personal learner assessments, critical thinking activities, break out practice sessions, strategy identification workshops and personal instructor-student counseling. Continued learning options may include putting a new language learning strategy to work for you among local native speakers of a variety of world languages.
